Cakes with a difference

Cakes with a difference

Have you ever seen a cake that looks too much like art to possibly be edible? In Marimekko’s sample sewing studio in Helsinki, they’re making fabric works of art that look good enough to eat.  On a trip to New York in July I was blown away by this stunning storefront window of Marimekko’s Flagship Store in Fifth Avenue.

Marimekko, established in 1951, is a Finnish textile and clothing design company renowned for its original prints and colours. The company designs and manufactures high-quality clothing, interior decoration textiles, bags and other accessories in Helsinki, Finland.

Amazing design makers Sue and Becks Jennings have created a textile art collection of original jewellery cupcake and ice cream pincushion boxes, trinket boxes and big bow bags.  Each item is handmade from wool, felt and fabric.
This tower of cupcakes on a three tier calico cake stand holds cupcakes handmade from felted wool and cashmere and decorated with felted cherries and pearl pins.  Each cupcake is encased in ticking fabric and filled with English Lavender.

This delightful set of nine fabric petit fours from german toy makers Haba is the perfect addition to pretend play tea parties and teddy bear’s picnincs. The pretty soft toy cakes and pastries are made from an assortment of fabrics in different colours and textures, with embroidered and beaded embellishments. Each fabric petit four sits in a paper cake case and the set comes in attractive Haba packaging. Children love serving the pretend play cakes to family and friends during role play, and these are also a nice size to use for doll’s tea parties. Haba’s range of pretend play food looks good enough to eat .
